Chicago, IL, USA, 2008-2009 Personal Manifestos/Public Contradictions with Mike Bancroft Summer Teacher Institute explored the relationship between belief and action, looking closely at the ways in which human beings negotiate, hold, & balance contradiction. Through the use of text & image teachers looked at the inadequacies, failures, disappointments, and outrages of the present political, historical, social moment, exposing beliefs, systems, structures, and questions that rattle our sense of private and political (in)securities. We will also investigate the power of text & image to galvanize change, identifying the methods and practices of contemporary artists/activists to provoke dialogue and exchange around the most potent questions of our time, 2008. Me in Another Life with Cheryl Pope Professional Development for Teachers: Who are you? What are the circumstances that led to your current being-in-flux? Perhaps there is a “you” that exists somewhere in another life. Or maybe there is a version of yourself frozen in the past. In this multi-disciplinary 3-day workshop, artists Cheryl Pope and Amanda Lichtenstein invited participants to consider the idea of “me in another life.” Using contemporary art practices, participants designed and assembled a “you kit” including self-portraits, screen-prints, poetry, and other ephemera/found objects composed to create everything the “you” might need or reveal in another life, 2008. |
